KReader - Speed Reading in Javascript

May 2nd, 2008 · 1 Comment · KRead This Article!

Well, I found spreeder.com a few days ago and liked the concept, but I didn’t really like that I had to copy and paste things there (or highlight and bookmark, which was nice, but not nice enough). Also, I thought it would be really nifty if you could provide this for people visiting your site, instead of them already having to know about it. And just like that, yet another project was born!

I used mootools, my standard go-to with javascript, and coded up an ugly but working version. There are still a lot of things I want to add, but I wanted to get it functional as soon as I could. I also put together a basic wordpress plugin, but I fear it will require editing your template to really use, which nobody wants to do. :( I’ll look into that more later.

Anyway, I made a page for it - check out KReader in the page list in the menu, and you can also check it out on any post (try it on this one!) by using the “KRead This Article!” link just under the header. Feedback is going to be big here, so please share any and all your thoughts about it.

When it is finished to my satisfaction, I will release it publicly for free use and will put it on the wordpress plugins directory as well.

Ok, this is cool, BUT ouch my eyes hurt…and there is the “guitar hero effect” of the screen seeming to move after your are done reading. Really it starts before the end, but very noticable ad uncomfortable for any prolonged period of time. Maybe a new way to display instead of scrolling. The only other way I can think of right now is flashing, but i don’t think that that would be much better.
