Age of BSOD

Another $50 well spent. I bought Age of Conan because I want to use is as a ‘staying awake’ tool for trying polyphasic later this week (tomorrow!?). A couple of my buddies are playing, I haven’t played an mmo for a while, I need something to not-sleep on, and I’ll have a few extra hours a day if all goes well.

My dying computer can’t handle it, which is no surprise, so I installed it on the laptop. After a lengthy install spanning 2 DVDs and a patch, I fired it up and hit the Blue Screen of Death. A friend of mine said it is pretty common for people to BSOD (WHAT?!), but updating the video drivers can help with that. I complied, which was a pain in the ass since toshiba manages my drivers on the laptop, but I got it done. It BSODed again, but on the third time I made it to character creation.

Unfortunately, for some reason it appears character creation is tied into the network, even though it should be totally offline until you actually submit a finished charater. There is extreme lag, the model doesn’t load correctly, and I get DC’d from the server (that I shouldn’t be connected to in the first place), losing the admittedly meager progress I had made as it kicked me back to login.

I haven’t even made a character and I’m already appalled at these guys’ inability to make software that even runs… Sigh… I’ve heard the game is good – hopefully I get to play it one day.
