Well, I’ve decided I’m definitely going to attempt the Uberman polyphasic sleep schedule (20 minute naps, 6 times per day), even though all my friends backed out or ramped back to everyman ( 3 hour sleep block, 3 20 minute naps). The ideal day I picked out for starting is tomorrow - here is my hopeful plan:
Thursday - start the naps religiously, dont sleep at night
Friday - tired bc I just pulled an all nighter
Saturday - zombie - I’ve never pulled 2 all nighters in a row, so this will be a big test i think
Sunday - At this point I will have either failed bc I couldn’t nap or will be on the way up
Monday - Holiday, I expect to still be groggy, but coming out of it
Tuesday - Work day - tired but hopefully functional
I’m sure it will take longer than that to adjust, but I’m hoping to get the absolute worst days out while I’m not supposed to be working.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea that it is possible to only sleep 2 hours per day. Exciting if true! One thing I’m interested in testing myself is the psychological strain of not having the day broken by a long sleep. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to me, but almost every blog I’ve read about polyphasic has said this was a huge problem for them. We shall see! I’m also very interested in the physical effects of not getting the sleep. Will I be tired? Some people have speculated that the sleep phases missed in polyphasic contribute to health and healing. Will I be more sore or easily damaged? Will I get sick? I’m already having pretty bad allergies - will this exacerbate that? I emailed some PhDs at UTD to see if anyone wanted to do a study on the effects, but nobody there was interested. Seriously, there is not much out there on this so it is totally a free publish. Bastards.
Ken and I will be blogging the process of the change, so we decided on some key issues we want to address.
- alertness
- productivity
- health
- appetite
- ease of sleep
- clarity of mind / mental chatter
- healing
- physical recovery
- energy levels / strength
- happiness/mood
- concentration
- time dialation
The first post begins tomorrow!
