Yesterday I started playing X-Com again, and haven’t really stopped. I’ve played through almost the whole game in about 24 hours, and it is even more fun than I remembered. It is shocking that nobody (that I have seen) has been able to emulate the amount of sheer fun in X-Com — it makes me want to step up and fill the gap. I just started shooting down large ships recently, which is awesome, but I haven’t caught my research up to mind shields or whatever, so the etherials and sectiod commanders wreak havoc on my guys. I’ve lost almost all my high level people and end up taking big herds of rookies in, only to have them get mind controlled and turn on each other. I ended clearing an entire terror ship with one guy while the rest of the crew killed each other off via MC, panics, and beserking. That guy is officially ‘the bomb’ and I restart missions that he dies in.
I’ve also developed a certain rule subset for myself. I’m not a fan of the saving-every-turn mentality and rolling back if any mistakes are made — that takes a lot of the fun out for me. However, the game crashes a lot, so I end up saving before every mission (99% of crashes are on mission loading). This means I can play the misisons out and if things go terribly, I can give it another go. It’s in between hardcore no-saving and pansy save-every-turn, and I like it.
If anybody is interested, it might be fun to play ‘side-by-side’ and only allow this kind of saving. Or, play on superhuman or hard and tweak the rules in a similar manner somehow. I’ll be pestering those of you I know in real life about this…
