A while back I was talking with an online buddy about creating a game together. We tossed a lot of ideas around, one of which was a music-based shmup where the beat of the music influenced the spawns and movements of the enemies. We passed the idea up originally because neither of us have any experience with that, but I came back to it today because I still think it has a lot of potential (audiosurf aside). Serendipitously, pygame just released a new version that includes sndarray, a numpy/numeric (read, fast) way to access, among other things, the amplitude at any point of sound files. This is exactly what I needed and I quickly put together a small proof of concept that pulses a circle based on the beat. I still have a long way to go, but the hardest part has been done for me, so I’m pretty excited about the possibilities. More news will come as the project progresses. Don’t expect anything until after LD next week though.
