SETI@Home Stats

SETI@Home is how SETI (the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) processes the mountains and mountains of data they bring in while listening to the cosmos. In the same way the human genome was decoded, SETI@Home uses the idle time of volunteer computers to process bits of the data. As an awesome person, you download the screensaver and your computer processes SETI information and sends the results back to the project. One home computer doesn’t do much, but the hundreds of thousands of volunteers that are out there doing it right now are more powerful than the fastest supercomputers ever built (and a WHOLE LOT less expensive). It has no negative impact on you (except for probably using a bit more power) since it only processes data when you aren’t using your computer, so go sign up now! If you’re a jerk :) and are against SETI, there are lots of other programs you can process for like protein folding, climate prediction, modeling particle accelerators, searching for pulsars, and more.

ANYWAY, my SETI@Home page scrapes the stats for any SETI@Home processing group that you specify (the default is the MUA team) and displays it in a snazzy flash pie chart. It is a fun and cool way to see who is processing the most data for your team, and has led to good natured rivalry among our friends (damn you quad cores!).

Our processing team could really use more members so please get a seti@home account and join our group (search for MUA - we were the first link last time I checked). If this helps, here is our team page: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=119441
